Mahogany Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Preparation

Melt chocolate with water over very low heat; blend well. Cool thoroughly; then stir in sour cream. Meanwhile, sift flour with soda, salt, and baking powder. Cream butter and sugars. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Beat in vanilla. Alternately add flour mixture and chocolate mixutre, mixing well after each addition.

Pour into 2 paper-lined 9-inch layer pans. Bake in moderate oven at 350 about 35 minutes. Cool and frost.
